Calling all fans of mystery thrillers! You have GOT to check these out! And now, you can enter to win ALL 3 eBooks of the Michael Sykora series by Darcia Helle!
But first…my review of No Justice (my review of Beyond Salvationwill be coming soon!)
To some, he is a software programmer who designs games to teach children how to read.
To Ruby, he is a workaholic and her boss – and she still mothers him like she used to when he was little boy abandoned by his mother and left with a drunken, absent daddy who went on frequent benders.
To Isaac, he is a beer-drinking, pool-playing, lifetime friend – and the only man who understands the anguish he carries in his soul from having loved-ones brutally ripped from their lives.
To Nikki, he is a former lover (and a great lay at that), a lost friend – and the only man she trusts when her life is threatened.
To Sean, he is a man of conscious, a man with a well-earned reputation – and the only man who once hired him to do a job, then finished it himself.
To Renwick, Nelson, Lott, and all the other scum of the world, he is a hunter.
Michael Sykora is all of these things. He’s the “abandoned son of a mother who couldn’t love him enough, the son of a drunk, the fiance of a murdered woman, … a hired killer.”
He is the Ghost.
There are so many things I liked about this book! First, the action is fast-paced and non-stop, start to finish (I think the short chapters had a lot to do with this). Second, the story had multiple POVs – which is something I enjoy and feel gives it a little more depth instead of leaving it on a singular plane. Third, the dialogue (although cheesy at some points) was cleverly written, believable (i.e. the jibes Isaac and Michael exchange) and had me laughing out loud at times. Fourth, the former-love-story-slash-current-sexual-tension between Michael and Nikki is palpable. And while there are times when I thought, “There’s no way one guy is capable of all of this!” I realized it was no different than the movie Taken (one guy takes on a whole gang of underground kidnapping and selling of women – and defeats everyone) – which I loved!
No Justice was a light read, almost like a short story series, but with a little more meat – meaning there is a little backstory for the characters, but it isn’t a heaping mound you have to wade through. If you’re looking for a fast summer read, check out the Sykora novels by Darcia Helle!
